In May, seven PSE seniors were inducted into a newly-formed national engineering professional society, The Order of the Engineer. This society was formed with two principles in mind: 1) The primary purpose of engineering is to serve the public; and 2) All engineers share a common bond.
In the induction ceremony, the students publicly accepted the "Obligation of an Engineer," the formal statement of an engineer's responsibilities to the public and the profession. In addition, they received a small, stainless ring, as a symbol of membership in the profession. The ring is supposed to be worn on the 5th finger of the working hand.

All graduates from accredited engineering programs are eligible to join the Order of the Engineer. Graduates with PSE degrees who are interested in participating in the ceremony in December 2008 or May 2009 should contact Med Byrd at med_byrd@ncsu.edu.
