Dr. Vincent Chiang and Dr. Hasan Jameel, both professors in the Department of Wood & Paper Science, were recently announced as principal investigators for a an exciting new research project funded by the USDA Rural Development Grant program.
The new three-year grant, worth almost $1 million, will allow NC State to test the efficacy of growing genetically-modified trees across North Carolina and using them to produce ethanol inexpensively.
The special trees, developed by Dr. Chiang, grow faster, have more cellulose, and have to 50 per cent less lignin than normal trees.
NC Senator Elizabeth Dole personally delivered the grant check, in a ceremony attended by Chancellor Oblinger in August. The photo below shows students in the PSE program with Senator Dole, along with Dean Robert Brown and the Chancellor.
