PSE Has New Faculty Member...and New Course!

The Paper Science & Engineering welcomed a new faculty member in January of this year. Dr. Sunkyu Park joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor, with a research focus on biofuels science and technology.

A native of Raleigh, Sunkyu received his undergraduate education at Seoul National University in South Korea. He received his Ph.D. from NC State in 2006. Afterwards, he had post-doctoral experiences at the University of Tennessee and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado.

Sunkyu is married and has two children.

Beginning in Fall 2009, Dr. Park will be the instructor for a new core course in the PSE curriculum. PSE 425, Bioenergy & Biomaterials Engineering, is a 3-credit course taught at the senior level. The goals for this course include increasing student understanding of biomass and renewable resources and how they can be converted into energy, fuels, and materials. The course will focus on basic principles, engineering operations, and economics. It is hoped that this new course will enhance student strength and marketability in an area that is growing in importance, both within the paper industry and beyond.
