PSE Students, Faculty Take Service/Charity to Heart

Most students attending the university these days learn about the importance of service to others as part of being a well-rounded individual. However, being taught this is one thing -- actually doing it is another. In the case of the students and faculty of the PSE program, actions follow the words!
In the past year, seven PSE undergrads were involved in the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) or other service programs. Instead of spending their spring break partying or going to the beach, students on ASB travel to a remote site with infrastructure or other needs and work hard to help others.

Other PSE students participated in Service Raleigh, a large-scale coordinated volunteer effort focused in the community surrounding NC State.

Members of the NCSU student TAPPI chapter participated in Paper Express, in which they go to elementary and middle schools and show students how to make paper.

Students, staff and faculty were actively involved in two large charity events this year. Three faculty, one staff person, and at least seven PSE undergrads participated in the Krispy Kreme Challenge. In this now-famous event, participants must race two miles, eat a dozen doughnuts, then race two miles back -- all in less than an hour. 5500 people participated this year, raising $35,000 for the NC Children's Hospital. (Yes...the faculty managed to keep the doughnuts down...)

Recently, a team of students, faculty, and staff from the College of Natural Resources (manty from the PSE program) participated in the 12th Annual Triangle Race for the Cure. This event attracted over 20,000 runners and raised almost $2 million for breast cancer research.
